Snowbots
The great thaw is upon us now and these snowbots are no more. I've loved the snow, in particular, making stuff out of it. The snowbots are one of my favourite creations. There were a collaboration with the very fine snow artist Squirrel. He created the one on the left, but is also responsible for the eyebrows on mine. We made them while at January's Open Coffee and it was brilliant fun.
You can see more snowbot photos on Flickr.
Looking forward to Leeds Light Night 2009

Light Night in Leeds is a great event and I'm really looking forward to this year. Partly because I'm a little bit involved, but also because some of my friends are doing really exciting stuff there this year. The talented Andy Sykes (aka ‘Hexjibber' for some reason) will be using FriiSpray at Ha Ha Bar to create audience generated animations that will get shown on the Big Screen in Millennium Square. I will be there helping him set up FriiSpray Virtual Graffiti and if possible taking most of the credit for all his hard work. We're going to be inviting passers by to paint using a virtual spray can on to the window of Ha Ha Bar and Andy is going to take their creations and bring them to life on the big screen. It's going to be a lot of fun, so please come down and see us.
Another project that I will be going to see is Pyramid of Art's sound web. I was involved in their project last year, but I managed to miss it being exhibited at last year's Light Night. I arrived just as they were closing the doors. So I'm hoping to sneak away from Andy (if he lets me) to go and see what they've done this year. It was created by the young people in the Pyramid of Arts Youth Group and will hopefully be as big a success as what they did last year.
Something I'm not involved in, but is happening at my office at Old Broadcasting House is something to do with electric pets. Got no idea what it is, but it sounds like fun and I will be checking it out.
Something I'm going to miss on the night is the work by my Jam Jar Collective colleagues Dave and Stuart at Temple Mill. Viewings of their light sculpture have completely sold out on the night. It's running through the week so I'm hoping I can catch it on another night.
There's literally another 100 things going on, so there's no chance of seeing everything, but it's going to be a fun night.
Draw doodles on Flickr photo
This is my latest creation using Flash and ActionScript 3. You can draw a lovely doodle on one of your Flickr photos and then save it and send it to your friends.
It started as a simple doodle program, but I thought adding Flickr photos would make it more fun. It uses the Flickr API to load the photos and a web service I've written in ASP.NET to save and load the doodles.
I've been sending people Christmas doodles this year as Christmas eCards.
So, why not go and doodle on your photos and send them to your friends.
Flash Flickr viewer
This Flickr viewer uses Flash CS3, ActionScript 3 and the Flickr API to display public photos from a selected user's Flickr account. I've created it because I've got a few project ideas where you will need to select a photo from Flickr. I've been impressed with the improved object orientedness of ActionScript 3 and this has let me build this in a way where all the different bits can be re-used very easily.
This has been a nice project to get my head round some of the new features in ActionScript 3. I've been particularly impressed with the new way of loading and using XML. It's so much easier and just makes sense. The event model has also been much improved.
I'm also very impressed with the Flickr API. It's great to be able to take the wealth of content they've got and play about with it. In the future I hope to play about with some other APIs. I love how sites are offering APIs and letting people extend and join up their services. I think the joined up web offers some amazing possibilities.
